How to Properly Use an Exfoliator

Using an exfoliator can be a great way to keep your skin in good condition, especially if it’s part of an overall skincare routine. But, it’s important that you’re using it properly. Overdoing it with an exfoliator can damage your skin, and not using it properly will mean it’s much less effective than it could be. Seoul Mamas can help! We’re going to offer you some simple steps to make sure you’re using your exfoliator in a way that really makes your skin glow.

Clean Your Skin Before You Exfoliate

Before you use your exfoliator, you need to clean your skin. Use hot water to do this, as hot water helps to open your pores — just make sure it isn’t so hot that it’s painful. You could also soak a towel with hot water and hold it against your face for a couple of minutes to help soften your skin and open up your pores. Again, make sure the water isn’t too hot. Wash off your face with your regular face wash so that it’s completely clean.

Patch-Test Your Product

You can skip this step if you’re using an exfoliator you’re familiar with, but new exfoliating products should be patch-tested the first time you use them. Apply a small amount of the product to a small part of your skin to see if it causes any sort of reaction. If it doesn’t cause a reaction, you can move on to the next step.

Apply the Scrub

Exfoliators and scrubs are abrasive by design — it’s how they do what they’re supposed to do. Because of how abrasive they can be, you should be gentle when you apply a scrub to your face. Using the tips of your fingers, apply the scrub evenly over your face with soft, circular motions. If you have any open cuts on your skin, it’s best not to use an exfoliator. This is especially true if you have a sunburn, as the sensitive new skin is going to make using a scrub extremely painful.

Rinse with Warm Water

Once you have exfoliated all the skin on your face, it’s time to rinse the scrub away. Use warm water rather than hot this time, and gently wipe the scrub away until your skin is clear. Once it’s washed off completely, use a towel to pat your face dry. Don’t rub the towel against your skin to dry it, since you’ve already scrubbed your face and more rubbing might cause irritation.

Moisturize Dry Skin

Once you’re done and your face is dry, it’s a good idea to apply a gentle moisturizer. Exfoliating can dry out your skin, so you want to keep it hydrated. How often you exfoliate depends on the type of skin you have, but once or twice a week is generally enough in most cases.
